2009 Classic Safari

FinishCongratulations to Hardev Sira and Denis Giraudet who finished 30th overall despite the electrical problems and an encounter with a local bus which wiped the side of the car.Day 8Gogi & Denis Giraudet have pulled back more places to 30th overall. It will be difficult to get much higher as the car in front is over an hour ahead. This will be the last report for a while as I am on my way to join Dave for a well earned break. Day 7Our Safari crew have pulled back a couple of places today and are currently in 33rd place so hopefully the service crew have fixed the problems.Day 6Apparently the service crew worked their socks off today to try and render the car fit for the remaining days of the event.Day 5Unfortunately our crew has dropped futher back today to 35th. From the results on the rally web site it looks as if they have pulled another stage maximum. Day 6 is a rest day (for the crews only!) giving the service crew all day to work on the car and hopefully fix it for the remainder of the event. We haven't actually had any news from our people for a couple of days but as soon as we do we will post the information
Day 4 The crew have dropped back to 30th today.
Day 3 Unfortunately the crew had electrical gremlins after the end the last stage of the day and the service crew had to get bits to the car to fix it so they were late at the final control. Hardev Sira and Denis Giraudet have moved up a further 4 places on day 3, which is excellent but they will have lateness penalties to add.
Well done to Hardev Sira and Denis Giraudet who have improved 10 places on day 2, the first proper day of the event.
The rally started on Sunday under the tusks in Mombasa and the cars then competed on the first stage whiche decides the start order for Monday. Hardev Sira (Gogi) and Denis Giraudet were 34th.

The whole route from Mombasa through Kenya and Tanzania back to Mombasa is approximately 4,500 kilometres (2,800 miles) and, of that distance, no less than 1,882 kilometres (1,170 miles) are competitive sections. There are three competitive sections each day - with of course an exception on the rest day at Amboseli on Friday, November 27th - which, including the "seeding" section on the day of the ceremonial start makes a total of twenty-five competitive sections. This is a few more than the average number of special stages in a World Championship Rally but, on those events, the average total length of competitive mileage is around 350 kilometres (217 miles).
